Ending Your Tenancy

Ending your tenancy cover

Giving Notice

If you wish to end your tenancy, you must give us one calendar month's notice in writing.

The notice period will not start until we receive written confirmation that you wish to give up your tenancy.

Outstanding Rent

You are liable to pay rent/service charge until the date your tenancy ends or the date you return the keys to us, whichever is later.

In some circumstances, people are eligible for ‘overlapping Housing Benefit’ for a period after you have moved out, however this is subject to you claiming Housing Benefit at your new address. You would also have to show Housing Benefit that you did not delay in giving your Notice to Westcountry Housing and that the overlap was unavoidable. We can assist you with a claim for overlapping benefit if this is applicable.

Gas and Electricity

You need to let us have details of current gas and electric suppliers when you leave the property, as well as any pre-payment keys/cards.

In order to ensure that you arenot charged for any Utilities usage after you have left, you need to inform the utility companies that you have left the property giving them a final metre reading.  You will also need to provide them with forwarding address.

Water Rates and Council Tax

You will need to South West Water and the Council Tax department of your Local Authority that you have left the property and provide them with a forwarding address.

The leaflet Ending Your Tenancy explains what you need to do and gives you some helpful reminders.
