Equality and Diversity

A project involving and supporting Westcountry's Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) residents

Westcountry Housing, a member of Westward Housing Group, is committed to equal opportunities.

The Housing With Respect project is run by Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council.

Each year we take part in the Housing with Respect stand at Plymouth's hugely successful Respect Festival and here are a few!  Join us next year - the event is on 24th and 25th October 2009.

All partner organisations aim to:

  • improve their equality and diversity policies and procedures
  • share good practice to help deal effectively with racist incidents
  • strengthen their commitment and offer support to their BME residents living in Plymouth.
  • raise general awareness of the issues

For more information please contact PDREC through www.plymouthrec.org

Housing With Respect offers support to BME residents on behalf of the organisation, on an individual basis, as well as liaising with the partner organisations.

History:

The project was started jointly by Westcountry Housing, Tamar Housing Society, Devon and Cornwall Housing Association and Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council. Plymouth City Council also joined the project later, on a limited partner basis.

Since the project started, four more partners have joined: The Guinness Trust, Signpost HA, Sovereign HA and Tor Homes.

The project will be welcoming more partners in the coming year to ensure that it is self-financing.  Each of the partners provide financial support.

Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council works closely with the housing associations and the Council to manage the project.
