Sleeping with sharks in the name of Respect!

Sleeping with sharks group

Midnight feasts, movies and games were the order of the day as Westcountry's residents' children in Plymouth spent last night Sleeping with the Sharks at the National Marine Aquarium.

Fifty two seven to 11 year olds from a variety of ethnic backgrounds attended the event, which was organised by Housing with Respect partners as part of the Respect Festival 2008.

The children enjoyed a variety of activities and games focussing on respect as well as movies, a tour of the aquarium and a midnight feast before settling down to sleep surrounded by sea life.

Ann Wilkinson, spokesperson for Housing with Respect, said the Housing with Respect initiative aimed to support Plymouth’s City’s Black and Minority Ethnic individuals who were experiencing housing related racism.

“Sleeping with the Sharks is a fantastic opportunity to get children from a wide variety of backgrounds together in a fun environment and allow them to explore and understand equality and diversity in today’s environment", she said.

Housing with Respect is a partnership between Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council, Plymouth City Council, Housing Corporation, Westcountry Housing, Tamar Housing Society, Signpost Housing Association, Tor Homes, Sovereign Housing Association, Guinness Hermitage, Devon and Cornwall Housing and Sanctuary Shaftesbury.
